Hatha Yoga

A gentle form of yoga that links breath and movement, creating self awareness, and mindfulness. We focus on breathing, posture work (asana) and relaxation techniques to increase general health and wellbeing and relieve stress, developing a strong flexible body and a calm, balanced mind. Practicing yoga helps us relax and improve flexibility, muscle tone and stamina, while restoring inner peace and creating a harmonious body/mind. Yoga is simple, easily adapted to our daily life, allowing students to progress at their own pace according to individual needs and limitations.

The term Hatha Yoga is often used to describe physical styles of yoga practice which do not fall strictly within any of the more traditional styles (such as Iyengar or Ashtanga yoga). The Sanskrit word Hatha simply means vigorous or intense, and all styles of yoga practice which emphasise asana (postures) and pranayama (controlled breathing) can be called Hatha Yoga. The word hatha is also made up of two separate words, ha (sun) and tha (moon) emphasising the essential polarities of yoga practice, and the need to explore the constant interaction between hard and soft, static and mobile, yin and yang, male and female.
